Is Idolisation bad and, if so, why?

Idolisation is when a person strongly admires someone, generally a celebrity or a prominent figure of society, to the point of worship. Idolising someone to this extent can deeply influence their opinion on what’s right and wrong. Idolising a person who has an unhealthy lifestyle will lead to the idoliser thinking that the lifestyle is healthy. The consequences of this are negative and can lead to harmful habits.

A common example is when a deeply idolised influencer says something extremely derogatory, knowingly or unknowingly, fans of said celebrity will think it is alright to say the offensive statement. And if fans know that it is something offensive, they brush off what the influencer said. The influencer will then continue to use the offensive statement, without knowing that it is offensive because of the lack of awareness. If the influencer knows that it is offensive, the consequences are not faced.

Celebrities and influencers often throw around offensive terms in inappropriate places without realizing that what they are saying is wrong. Unfortunately, some know that it is incorrect, but they continue to use the terms.

One modern example of this is in Olivia Rodrigo’s hit song “good 4 u”. Rodrigo uses the word "sociopath" to describe their ex-significant other because they broke up with the singer. A sociopath is someone who is antisocial and often ignores the feelings of others. The singer's ex-significant other is not a sociopath because they broke up with the singer and was unaffected by the breakup. By Umeed Uriyaan
