Cher
Renowned music artiste and film star, Cher, is one of many famous celebrities in the entertainment industry to have been vocal about her diagnosis of dyslexia and dyscalculia, which she came to know of in her 30s. The 'Goddess of Pop' struggled with her inability to read and understand as easily as her peers and had trouble with Mathematics. In an interview, Cher says, “ When I was in school, it was really difficult. Almost everything I learned, I had to learn by listening. My report cards always said that I was not living up to my potential.”
The difficulties she felt while trying to pursue a formal education finally led her to drop out of school in her 11th Grade. But Cher was adamant about not letting her learning difficulties affect her passion and her inherent talent and beautiful voice was soon acknowledged by the music and entertainment industry. Her sheer determination to succeed and her undeniable talent helped her reach the heights of her career. Cher also says that she finds it easier to cope with her dyslexia now. Though she reads her scripts at a slow pace, she is able to memorise it efficiently. Cher is now an outspoken advocate for children with learning and thinking differences and tries the utmost to help them . When asked in an interview that if she could turn back time and change one thing would she choose to not have dyslexia, Cher instantaneously replied, “No! It caused pain, but it’s me!” Cher triumphed over dyslexia and showed many others that dyslexia is not something to be ashamed of and that one can overcome the difficulties associated with it.
